What are the marijuana laws in El Monte?
The Proposition 215, the medical use of marijuana act, was a ray of hope for patients suffering cancer, Alzheimer’s, depression and other related diseases. However, under the federal law the marijuana remained schedule 1 drug and due to which there was always a confusion between the state and federal law. Because of this confusion in law various cities chose to remain neutral and not to allow the marijuana in every form. There were various cities which banned the medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation.
The city of El Monte, permitted the medical marijuana dispensary in 2010 under ordinance number 1137. However, the city council banned all dispensaries and commercial cannabis business in the city in 2014.
In June 2017, the city council proposes for the amendment of the earlier act and modify it with the permission of distribution in the city. Later in August 2017, the Ad Hoc committee suggested that the distribution, cultivation and manufacturing be permitted in the city.
In November 2017, the city council under ordinance number 2924, established a ban on medicinal and adult-use cannabis dispensaries, retailers, microbusinesses, and deliveries within the city. However, in the same ordinance, it was the city council adopted that medicinal-only cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, and laboratory testing will be allowed.
Currently the city permits only distribution, cultivation, and laboratory testing in the city. That is why you need to get a medical marijuana card to use marijuana for treatment of illnesses and ailments.
