California

California legalized medical marijuana in 1996, ID cards are issued through the MMICP, and a database is maintained for patients and caregivers. ID card verifies authorization for possession, cultivation, transportation, and use of medical marijuana for those eighteen and older. Recreational use and possession are allowed for adults, under the age of twenty-one. A card in California is valid for up to a year.

Connecticut

Connecticut legalized recreational marijuana on July 1, 2021. Adults the age of twenty-one can legally use and possess small amounts. State and local municipalities must implement regulations. Illinois

Illinois established a medical cannabis program in 2013, allowing patients with qualifying conditions to access medical marijuana. A patient must be twenty-one years old to qualify. A card in Illinois will be valid for a year. To receive a medical cannabis card in Illinois, you must register here.

Iowa

In May 2017, Iowa legalized medical cannabis products containing CBD and THC, like oils and capsules. Recreational use and possession are considered illegal and could possibly result in a misdemeanor crime. Patients must be eighteen or older. Registration for Iowa can be done here. A card in Iowa is valid for a year after being issued.

Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Health became responsible for regulating the state’s medical marijuana program on August 1, 2022. To receive a medical card, the patient must be eighteen or older. A card will be valid for one year.

Maine

In 1999, Maine allowed medical marijuana but had no legal distribution mechanism. The Maine Medical Marijuana Act was passed in November 2009 to address these issues. Maryland

Starting July 1, 2023, individuals 21 years and older will be permitted to possess and consume a limit of 1.5 ounces of cannabis, 12 grams of concentrated cannabis, or an equivalent amount of cannabis products with a total THC content not exceeding 750 mg. This quantity is referred to as the “personal use amount.” With a medical marijuana card, users can be eighteen or older. In Maryland, a card can be valid for up to three years. Massachusetts

Massachusetts medical marijuana program was signed into law in July 2017. To be eligible to receive a medical marijuana card in Massachusetts, the patient must be eighteen years or older. Michigan

In Michigan, medical cannabis was legalized in 2008. The age requirement is 18 to apply for a medical card in Michigan. Recreational use is legal, but must be twenty-one years or older. Minnesota

Missouri

In Missouri, medical cannabis was legalized in 2018. The patient must be eighteen. To become eligible for a medical card in Missouri, applicants must be eighteen or older. Montana

In Montana, medical cannabis was legalized in 2004. To become eligible for a medical card in Montana, applicants must be eighteen years of age or older. In Montana, medical marijuana cards are valid for three years. Individuals can sign up for a Montana Medical card through the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) Medical Marijuana Program. However, the recreational use of marijuana remains unlawful. New Jersey
