Why Drying and Curing Marijuana is an Essential Part of a Relaxing Cannabis Experience

Ever smoked a bud so fine that it made you go “Oh damn! That was special!!”?.  Well, that’s what a well-cured bud looks like. Drying and curing marijuana is an art and it’s necessary to craft your stash to perfection for those high sessions.

So, what’s your idea of a perfect bud?

Crisp with a heavenly smell, and of course, the one which offers a delicious high. Essentially, this is what dreams are made of.

Well, I’ll make that dream a reality for you. So, let’s get started!

Why is the Importance of Drying and Curing Marijuana?

Best Way to Dry Cannabis

To ensure the best quality buds, you need to dry and cure them. There are more reasons why this needs to be done:

1) It Increases Potency

Cannabis and potency go hand in hand. All seasoned enthusiasts swear by the potency a particular strain offers. THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and other cannabinoids undergo chemical changes. THCA transforms into its psychoactive self THC.

Naturally, this process operates smoothly while the plant is intact. Now, what happens at the time of harvesting? The process doesn’t stop immediately. Slow drying facilitates this process. Ideally keeping the harvested stock at 45% to 55% humidity with a temperature between 60 and 70°F. This process is vital for improving the potency and the overall quality of your stock of cannabis.

2) Enhances Flavor and Feel

The terpenes are responsible for the aroma and flavor in cannabis. If you keep the temperature below 70°F, the terpenes are at the risk of evaporating. Ideally, a slow curing process at low temperatures works brilliantly in restoring the terpenes.

This generates ideal conditions for the bacteria to break down unwanted sugars and minerals. The harsh feeling you get in the throat while smoking is due to the presence of these sugars and minerals. So, curing makes it smooth for you.

3) It Preserves your Stock

One of the major challenges of storing cannabis is the development of molds. If you follow a proper curing process, then this problem can be prevented. It keeps the buds free of mold and they can be stored in air-tight containers without any loss of potency.

Which is the Best Way to Dry Marijuana?

Drying is all about keeping the temperature and humidity right. The following process works pretty well:

1) Trim your buds to perfection. Remove all the unwanted leaves to achieve a better look for your buds. If you’re not in favor of trimming, you can cut off the branches and hang them upside down from a hanger or wire.

2) Keep your trimmed buds on a drying rack or mesh. Ideally, you should prevent piling up the buds on top of each to facilitate proper drying. Also, drying on a mesh or rack is much faster than the method of hanging down from a wire.

3) Keep the temperature at 60-70°F while maintaining a humidity of 45-55%. You need to ensure space is completely dark and keep a small fan handy to keep the air circulating in the drying space.

Keep these to adjust the drying environment:

  • Air Conditioner
  • Humidifier
  • Dehumidifier
  • Heater
  • Evaporative Cooler

Depending upon the conditions, it can take anywhere from 5 to 15 days to complete the drying process.

Curing is All About Patience

Keep your dried buds in airtight containers. Ideally, wide mouth mason jars are perfect for this job. During the first week of curing, you’ll have to open the jars several times a day to allow the exchange of fresh air. The moisture will escape and equip the jars with fresh oxygen.

When you dive into the second week, you’ll only need to open the jars once in a span of a few days.  After the 3rd week, you stash would be potent enough to provide a soothing experience. You can choose to cure it for up to 8 weeks to improve the quality even more.

So, drying and curing marijuana is all about following a basic procedure. With the right approach, you can get buds with enhanced flavor and potency. This can improve your overall cannabis experience and gift you a relaxing high that you deserve.
